TIT-COQ
Canada 1953, 103 min. Reals./Dirs.: Gratien Gélinas, René Delacroix
Adapted from Gratien Gelinas' award-winning 1948 play, tit-coq tells the bittersweet love story and difficult social integration of a young soldier born of unknown parents who dreams of marrying his sweetheart Marie-Ange upon his return from World War II. The film stars Gelinas (19091999), who is considered one of the founders of modern Canadian theatre and film. His concern for and characterizations of the "common man" influenced many playwrights after him, including Marcel Dube, Yves Theriault, and Michel Tremblay. TIT-COQ captured the Best Canadian Film Award in 1953. Don't miss the opportunity to see this classic in a new, archivally restored 35mm print. Presented in collaboration with the National Archives of Canada.
In French with English sub-titles.

NEW DUTCH CINEMA
LES PAYS-BAS AUJOURD'HUI : LE NOUVEAU CINÉMA
HOLLANDAIS

Filmmaking in The Netherlands has a long and distinguished history in documentary, animation, and, especially since the late 1960s, feature films. While having scored recent successes at the Academy Awards with films by Marleen Gorris (ANTONIA'S LINE) and Mike van Diem (CHARACTER), Dutch feature filmmaking must still constantly fight to be seen and heard. Faced with the Hollywood juggernaut, contemporary Dutch filmmakers are attempting to strike a balance between artistic expression and commercial viability. Selected from the last four years of Dutch production, this programme reveals the continued vitality of Dutch filmmaking in the face of the enormous pressures to maintain the rich tradition of Dutch cinema. It also features work by established Dutch directors as well as new and emerging talents .
Presented in collaboration with the Royal Netherlands Embassy, this series is touring to Winnipeg, Edmonton, and Vancouver.
