Soon after the fall of communism, the countries of Central Europe decided to start a new form of regional co-operation. In 1991, they established the Group of Visegrad that now consists of four countries: the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, and the Slovak Republic. Besides the strengthening of political, economic, and cultural relations, its main goal is closer co-operation in their integration process into the European Union. The four countries, with similar histories and cultural roots, also reveal a fascinating diversity.

HI, TERESKA / Czesc, Tereska
Poland 2001, 91 min. Director: Robert Glinski
Quiet and shy, 15 year old Tereska lives in a Warsaw apartment block with her laconic factory-worker mother and unemployed alcoholic father. She dreams of escaping her life of poverty and frustration by becoming a fashion designer, but lacks confidence in herself. When Tereska enters a tailoring trade school, she falls under the influence of rebellious fellow-student Renata who propels her towards her first cigarette, first kiss, and first crime. Soon Tereska joins the blockers generation, named after the blocks in which they grew up; a group of youth without life goals, without values and without hope for the future. A brilliant, unsparing, compassionate portrait of a society in transition, Glinskis film captured a Special Jury Prize and the FIPRESCI Award at the 2001 Karlovy Vary International Film Festival. English sub-titles.
