Harry, un ancien camarade de classe de Michel, s'invite, les
choses deviennent plus difficiles et plus sinistres. L'aide de
Harry, obsédé par Michel, commence à prendre

The Canadian
Film Institute is proud to present the work of internationally
acclaimed Slovak director, Martin Sulik. Born in 1962, Sulik
has quickly established himself as a leading figure in Slovak
cinema with his visually poetic cinematic style and his quietly
intense dramas of individuality. We are also pleased to announce that
Martin Sulik will attend the screenings of his work on both November
4 and November 5. Presented
in collaboration with the Embassy of the Slovak Republic.

denies their attempts, dictates who they can talk to, where they
can work and even how they dress. In addition to its perceptive
dramas of noble struggle and small-town insularity, THE SERVANT'S

filmmaker Frank Cole. Having just completed a new feature documentary-essay
film, Cole has returned after a decade long absence from the
Canadian independent film scene. Modest in number, his films
comprise a remarkable body of work. Formally rigorous and consistently
challenging preconceived notions of perception and knowledge,
the films of Frank Cole all examine the theme of the human struggle
with death. A seminal figure in the development of filmmaking
in Ottawa, Frank Cole is one of Canadian cinema's most singular
talents. The Canadian Film Institute is proud to present this
first retrospective of the astonishing work of Frank Cole.

On November 29, 1989, Cole began another lonely, harrowing journey
across the dangerous Sahara by camel, confronting his deeply
developed fear of death. Will the desert beat him, cause him
to abandon his symbolic negation of dying? Or will he fall prey
to the shifting weather patterns or political banditry in the
various countries he passes through? Filmed by Cole himself,
the striking images of the desert are combined with flashbacks
of his beloved dying grandfather. Cole here creates a powerful
cry for life and a disturbing meditation on mortality's ever
ticking clock. Rigorous and powerfully life affirming, LIFE WITHOUT
DEATH is an extraordinary cinematic experience.

Alternating between an enclosed room and the Sahara desert, A
LIFE contains little dialogue and one lone male character. It
offers a poetic rendering of mankind's struggle against mortality.
Cole's first feature length confrontation with death, while occasionally
impenetrable, is utterly unforgettable. As Geoff Pevere writes,
"Made entirely without dialogue, and consisting of a series
of rigorously composed, shot and edited images (mostly in close-up),
the film tells a story that, while minimal in literal terms,
strikes deep emotional and psychological chords. Visionary and
obsessive, A LIFE is quite unlike anything made in this country
before." Also tonight, we present Cole's two short documentaries,
A DOCUMENTARY (1979) and THE MOUNTENAYS (1982).

The CFI, in collaboration with SAW Video, is pleased to welcome
acclaimed Toronto experimental filmmaker, Barbara Stenberg. Tonight's
programme will include a selection of her works, including her
most recent and very impressive film, LIKE A DREAM THAT VANISHES
(Canada 2000, 40 min.) Barbara Sternberg will attend the screening
to introduce and discuss her work in the "intimate and interactive"
Club SAW.
