1st University of Ottawa Human Rights Film Festival
October 24, 2013 until October 26, 2013
Presented by the Canadian Film Institute in collaboration with the Human Rights Research and Education Centre of the University of Ottawa, this inaugural edition of the University of Ottawa Human Rights Film Festival tackles, in both fiction and documentary films, the most compelling human rights concerns of our times. The films selected explore everything from gender to globalization, from political repression to aboriginal rights. This remarkable collection of five films will not only open your eyes, but also open wide-ranging discussions and debates about human rights issues that concern us all.
In addition to the screenings, the Festival will feature guest filmmakers and speakers.
The 1st Ottawa Human Rights Film Festival will present four Ottawa premieres, including the latest (and TIFF-selected) film by legendary aboriginal filmmaker, Alanis Obomsawin, HI-HO MISTAHEY! It will also present films from Afghanistan, the U.S.A., and Italy, plus a very special anniversary screening of Costa-Gavras's searing drama about the 1973 military coup in Chile, MISSING, starring Jack Lemmon and Sissy Spacek. Joyce Horman of the Charles Horman Truth Foundation will introduce the film at the opening gala evening.
