Created in 1997, the goal of the Latin American Film Festival has always been to increase the awareness, appreciation, and understanding of Latin American cinema in Canada's capital. Over the first 19 years of programming and organizing this public festival, in collaboration with our generous partners at the GULA (the group of Latin American embassies accredted by the Government of Canada), we have presented 243 Ottawa premieres of Latin American films, welcomed over 20 visiting filmmakers, and attracted close to 60,000 spectators.

The Latin American Film Festival is now one Ottawa's most eagerly anticipated annual cultural events. This is due to the energy of the Latin American embassies and staff, our festival sponsors, our volunteers, and you, the generous public who come to the screenings to explore the incredible richness, diversity, and artistry of Latin American cinema. The event features only contemporary Ottawa premieres, gleaned from the screens of such festivals as Cannes, Berlin, Toronto, and Chicago to celebrate the rich and diverse cultures of Latin America.

Additional Programming
Our special sidebar program South ⟷ North: Cinema Across Borders returns with three amazing, important films exploring the relationships and cultural and filmmaking exchanges between Canada, the U.S.A., and Latin America, as well as a free discussion panel hosted by Carleton University's Latin American and Caribbean Studies. South ⟷ North takes place every Saturday during the festival. Plus, if you missed the international hit film EMBRACE OF THE SERPENT (Colombia, 2015) at the ByTowne, then our special screening on May 4th may be your last chance to see this breath-taking Oscar-nominated film on the big screen.
