Canadian Masters III: Guy Maddin
March 30, 2017 until April 1, 2017

The Canadian Film Institute’s Canadian Masters series is an annual celebration of excellence in Canadian filmmaking, featuring extensive onstage interviews, special screenings, and audience discussions with some of the greatest names in Canadian film history. In our 2016-2017 inaugural season, we are honoured to present three extraordinary Canadian masters of the moving image: Atom Egoyan (November), Alanis Obomsawin (January), and Guy Maddin (March).

We are proud to be partnering with Carleton University’s School For Studies In Art and Culture’s Film Studies section, which in 2016-2017 is celebrating its 40th anniversary. For four decades, Carleton Film Studies has produced some of the most important and influential film scholars, critics, and curators in Canada, and has also played a key role in the development of film culture generally in our nation.

This event will take place over two evenings, March 30 and April 1.

On March 30 at 7:30PM in the Arts Court Theatre, Canadian Film Institute Executive Director Tom McSorley will conduct an extensive, career-spanning onstage conversation with Guy Maddin, looking at his film works, his artistic process, and his rise from his first film in 1985 to becoming one of Canada's most well-known and celebrated filmmakers. This interview will also feature excerpts from many films in Maddin's remarkable filmography. Following the interview there will be a reception, with Guy in attendance.

On April 1 at 7:30PM at Carleton University's River Building Theatre, Guy Maddin will be presenting a selection of his films; two short films and one feature. In a unique twist, Juno winning percussionist and Professor of Music at Carleton University, Jesse Stewart will be accompanying the short films. To follow, Maddin will screen a rare Director's Cut edition of Archangel (1990).

The full program will consist of:

The Heart of the World  (2000, 6 minutes)

Odilon Redon, or The Eye Like a Strange Balloon Mounts Towards Infinity (1995, 5 minutes)

Archangel: Director's Cut (1990, 83 minutes)
