Maitres Chez Nous: The Humanist Cinema of Bernard Émond
June 20, 2009 until July 12, 2009

la-neuvaine3.jpgFrom his work in documentary to his emergence as a critically acclaimed feature film auteur, Bernard Émond is aremarkable figure in contemporary Canadian cinema. Both in how it is produced(through the groundbreaking filmmaking co-operative, ACPAV) and in what itexplores, his work has affinities with the golden age of auteurism in Quebeccinema (the generation of Jean Pierre Lefebvre, Claude Jutra, Michel Brault, etal) in its elegant resistance to commercial film styles and fashionable subjectmatter. Emond’s is a quietly radical analysis of how contemporary life isshaped by a culture of materialism and ephemerality, where we seem to be losing-- or worse, surrendering -- our ability to be ‘masters in our own homes,’literally and metaphorically. The Canadian Film Institute is proud to presentthis retrospective of the work of one of contemporary Canadian cinema’s mostthoughtful, intelligent, and articulate filmmakers, Bernard Émond.
