September 13, 2010 until September 20, 2010

Presented by the Embassy of Mexico, this trio of films about the Mexican Revolution is presented on the occasion of the launch of a new by Carleton University Film Studies Professor Zuzana Pick. The book, entitled Constructing the Image of the Mexican Revolution: Cinema and the Archive (University of Texas press, 2010), examines the representations of the revolution in Mexican cinema.

“Constructing the Image of the Mexican Revolution” is an examination of the ways in which the cinema participated in the visual constructions of the Mexican revolution and the processes that shaped and contributed to the dissemination of these constructions on film since the 1930s in Mexico and internationally. Each of the 7 chapters consists of a detailed commentary of key films such as the Mexican-produced "Vamonos con Pancho Villa" (Fernando de Fuentes, 1935), "Memorias de un mexicano" (Carmen Toscano de Moreno, 1950), "La Escondida" (Roberto Galvadón, 1956), "Reed: Insurgent Mexico" (Paul Leduc, 1971) and "Los rollos perdidos de Pancho Villa" (Gregorio Rocha, 2003.) Also considered are Hollywood, Soviet and Canadian produced-films such as "Viva Villa!" (Jack Conway, 1935), Sergei M. Eisenstein’s unfinished project known as "Que Viva Mexico!" (1931), "The Wild Bunch" (Sam Peckinpah, 1969), And "Starring Pancho Villa as Himself" (Bruce Beresford, 2003) and "Tina in Mexico" (Brenda Longfellow, 2001.) - Z. M. Pick

"An outstanding contribution to our critical understanding of the representation of the Mexican Revolution in contexts that go far beyond purely national interest."—Marvin D'Lugo, Professor of Spanish and Adjunct Professor of Screen Studies, Cla University
