The Enlightened Screen: Gary Burns
October 18, 2012 until October 20, 2012

Welcome to the first installment of an ongoing screening and guest artist series with Canada’s leading independent filmmakers.

The Cinema of Gary Burns
Since his impressive arrival on the Canadian film scene in the mid-1990s with the droll and insightful first feature, THE SUBURBANATORS, Calgary filmmaker Gary Burns has written and directed distinctive, incisive dramas and docudramas. Whether exploring teenaged angst and disaffection, the personal effects of fear and alienation, the culture of suburbia, or the meaning of life itself, Burns’ films are cinematically stylish searches, at once comedic and serious, for signs of intelligent life in the Canadian universe. What they explore and what you will discover in them will surprise, amuse, and unsettle you. As thoughtful as they are entertaining, Burns’ quirky, engaging films also bring a whole new meaning to the term, ‘western alienation.’ A decidedly 'enlightened' film artist, Gary Burns continues to produce challenging, inquisitive cinema. The Canadian Film Institute is honoured to have him in Ottawa to present his work.
