Acclaimed filmmaker and beloved instructor Philip Hoffman has recently been announced as one of the recipients of the Governor General's Awards in Visual and Media Arts. To celebrate this incredible achievement, Canada Council for the Arts and the Canadian Film Institute present a special screening of some of Hoffman's most iconic works.

Philip Hoffman is a reoccurring guest at the Canadian Film Institute’s Café Ex visiting guest artist series. A filmmaker of memory and association, Hoffman creates highly personal yet universal works, which weave fiction and documentary in an experimental 'diarist' cinema.

Born in Kitchener, Ontario, Hoffman’s filmmaking began with his boyhood interest in photography. After completing his formal education which includes a Diploma in Media Arts at Sheridan College and a Bachelor of Arts in Literature at Wilfrid Laurier University, Hoffman began working on his films, as well as teaching film, electronic and computer-based media in the Media Arts Program at Sheridan College. Currently Hoffman teaches in the Cinema and Media Arts Department at York University.

Screening line-up:
On the Pond (1978, 10 min, 16mm)
Somewhere Between (1984, 6 min, 16mm)
Kitchener Berlin (1990, 33 min, 16mm)
Opening Series (Kokoro is for Heart) (1999, 6 min, 16mm)
By the Time We Got to Expo (2015, 9 min, Digital)

Philip Hoffman will be in attendance to speak about his films and answer questions from the audience. This event is free and open to the general public.
