Bright Nights: The 7th Baltic-Nordic Film Festival
Richcraft Hall Theatre (formerly River Building), Carleton University, Friday, February 17, 2017, 7:00 pm
Set in the early 1960s, the unlikely hero of the incredibly kinetic Dawn is Janis, a cherubic Young Pioneer living on a farm commune called "Dawn" in Soviet-occupied Latvia. Indoctrinated to believe in the future utopia of unlimited plenty promised by communism, Janis betrays his drunken, murderous father to the authorities, and adopts the farm's boss Karlis as his new uncle. His actions will soon have strange and tragic consequences.

“Both a loving homage and a knowing critique of classic Eastern Bloc cinema, Dawn is a beautifully composed black-and-white tragicomedy…” (Hollywood Reporter)

Stunning. Winner of the 2016 Latvian Film Awards for Best Director.
