Canadian Masters III: Guy Maddin
Richcraft Hall Theatre (formerly River Building), Carleton University, Saturday, April 1, 2017, 7:30 pm
Exceptional Canadian filmmaker Guy Maddin will be presenting a selection of his films; two short films and one feature. The short films will be accompanied live by Carleton University Professor of Music, Jesse Stewart.

The full program will consist of:

The Heart of the World  (2000, 6 minutes)

Odilon Redon, or The Eye Like a Strange Balloon Mounts Towards Infinity (1995, 5 minutes)

Archangel: Director's Cut (1990, 83 minutes)

"Guy Maddin's fascinating, impenetrable film "Archangel" is a tongue-in-cheek homage to the sort of drama produced in Hollywood in the twilight zone between silent and talking pictures, when sound tracks were scratchy, the dialogue minimal and titles between scenes offered portentous commentary.

Set in the city of Archangel in the Russian Arctic at the intersection of World War I and the Bolshevik Revolution, it tells the interlocking stories of Lieut. John Boles (Kyle McCulloch), a one-legged Canadian soldier, and Philbin (Ari Cohen), a Belgian aviator, both of whom suffer memory disorders brought on by mustard gas. Boles is still in love with his wife, Iris, who is dead. When he meets Veronkha (Kathy Marykuca), a Russian nurse who resembles her and who also has amnesiac tendencies, he believes he has found Iris." - New York Times

Doors open at 7:00pm. Following the screenings, Guy will participate in a Q/A period with the audience.

The CANADIAN MASTERS series is presented by the Canadian Film Institute in collaboration with Carleton University’s School For Studies In Art and Culture: Film Studies.
