Israel, France, 2016, 102 minutes
English subtitles, Hebrew, Arabic

14th Israeli Film Festival
Richcraft Hall Theatre (formerly River Building), Carleton University, Sunday, June 11, 2017, 7:00 pm

Laila (Mouna Hawa) is an attractive, hardworking lawyer who lives in a Tel Aviv apartment with her best friend Salma (Sana Jammelieh) who works various jobs while trying to make it as a DJ. They both navigate the expectations of a patriarchal society, all the while partying late into the nights. When their new student house mate, Nour (Shaden Kanboura), shows up wearing a hijab, it is clear that she is experiencing a culture shock. Instead of becoming a source of conflict, a sense of camaraderie forms between these three women as they all deal with relationship issues: Salma in shocking her family by bringing a woman home to meet them, Laila by realizing that her new boyfriend is much less open-minded than she thought, and Nour, by trying to live her life contrary to the will of her fiancé. As these three young women feel the tug of traditional culture while they live their modern lives, they reveal the possibilities of profound social change through their everyday actions. English sub-titles.
