A box office smash in its native country of Venezuela, surpassing even Hollywood blockbuster SUPERMAN RETURNS, FRANCISCO is a highly imaginative historical epic about a revolutionary figure who began the struggle to end Spanish rule in Latin America in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. The film traces the journey of Miranda’s revolutionary life, from his being a soldier for Spain, to being tried for treason and becoming a fugitive, to forming a plan to bring freedom to his native land. All the while, the rakish Miranda finds himself the toast of Europe, and has a number of romantic engagements with women from European high society. Ultimately, Miranda returns to Venezuela to begin the revolution that will end Spanish rule. A spirited tribute to one of the more dubious and often forgotten heroes of the Spanish American revolution. English sub-titles.
