The tension between truth and fiction and the power of performance to dissolve the difference between the two have long been subjects of some fascination to Brazilian director Eduardo Coutinho.  With PLAYING, Coutinho continues his cinematic deconstruction.  Following a newspaper ad, ordinary women tell parts of their life stories to the camera, which are then re-enacted by professional actresses, blurring the boundaries between truth, fiction and interpretation.  The result – and the experience – is moving and exhilarating.
