To the Other Side is a novel examination of songs, drugs, and dreams along the U.S./Mexico border. Loza's hauntingly timely film tells the human story behind illegal immigration and drug trafficking between the U.S. and Mexico through the eyes of Magdiel, a 23 year-old fisherman and aspiring ‘corrido’ composer who dreams of a better life. Three countries, three cultures, and three different realities serve as the background for the stories of three children -- a Mexican boy, a Cuban boy and a Moroccan girl -- whose fathers have left for the wealthy destinations north of the Rio Grande and the Mediterranean. Through the day-to-day struggles of Magdiel and other hopeful immigrants, Side is an illuminating portrait of Mexican life. English sub-titles.
