The Balcony
dir. Giedre Beinoriute
Lithuania
48 minutes
Falling out of a balcony and scratching a chin or swallowing a fishbone doesn’t hurt - but it hurts to love.
The film is set in an undistinguished province town of the 1980s. After his parents’ divorce, 11-year-old Rolanas moves in next door to same-aged Emilija with his father. The children find friendship together, but each finds themselves unable to face the other out of shyness and fear. Their relationship blossoms as they communicate with each other, each sitting on their balconies and talking through a wall. They discover that they have much in common when Rolanas learns that Emilija’s parents also appear to be on the verge of divorce. Eventually, a nearly tragic accident prevents Emilija from making it to the balcony again. This encourages both children to set out for a “real” date.
