Klucis: Deconstruction of an Artist
dir. Peteris Krilovs
Latvia, 2009, 88 minutes
English subtitles

Bright Nights: The Baltic-Nordic Film Festival
Auditorium, 395 Wellington St., Friday, June 3, 2011, 9:00 pm

DECONSTRUCTION is dedicated to the Latvia-born constructivist artist, Gustav Klucis, who contributed much to the style of Soviet era propaganda art, but due to his Latvian national origins was executed by the Stalinist regime in 1938. Filmmaker Krilovs’ father – himself a member of independent Latvia’s clandestine provisional government – was also executed by the Soviets. Krilovs, like the son of his subject, Klucis, also had to change his family name to avoid persecution. A personal and, at times, painful personal reflection on both the role of the artist and the entanglements of aesthetics, politics, and history. English sub-titles.
