Forms of Light: The Films of Malcolm Sutherland
dir. Malcolm Sutherland
Canada, 120 minutes

Café Ex: 2012-2013
Club SAW, Thursday, November 1, 2012, 7:00 pm
For over a decade, Montreal-based independent animator Malcolm Sutherland has been producing some of the most impressive, stylistically freewheeling, and intelligent animated films in Canada. His work ranges in style from the comedy of the Fleischer Brothers and Hanna Barbera cartoons to the abstract expressionism of Norman McLaren and Pierre Hebert, to works reminiscent of the playful and profound inventiveness of Spanish artist, Joan Miro. Consistently engaging, Sutherland’s films also investigate the processes of image-making and how they relation to notions of memory, time, and knowledge itself. The Canadian Film Institute is pleased to begin our 15th season of Café Ex with this remarkable image-making artist.

Malcolm Sutherland will attend the screening to introduce and discuss his films. This evening will also feature the launch of the Canadian Film Institute publication, FORMS OF LIGHT: THE FILMS OF MALCOLM SUTHERLAND, edited by Tom McSorley.
