7 Cajas (7 Boxes)
One night in Asuncion’s bustling open market, seventeen-year-old wheelbarrow carter, Victor, captivated by a Hollywood crime film playing on a television, fantasizes about finding fame and fortune on the big screen. Victor’s prayers appear to be answered when a man offers him $100 U.S. for a seemingly simple task: transport seven boxes to a place on the outskirts of the market. Equipped with a borrowed cellphone to receive directions, Victor tries to fulfil his mysterious mission. But what had appeared to be a straightforward job meets with a series of dangerous obstacles: thieves, rival gangs, and a painstaking, aggressive searches conducted by the police. As the night wears on, Victor realizes he may be a pawn in a dangerous game — and the contents of those seven boxes may be more than he bargained for. Stylish and kinetic, 7 Boxes is a hugely entertaining first feature by Maneglia and Schembori, whose short films (Trash Love and Burning Oven) have been presented at our 2002 and 2005 Latin American Film Festivals.
