In this marvellous animated feature, Latvian-born artist and director Signe Baumane tells five whimsical tales based on the courageous women in her family and their battles with mental illness and the sweep of Latvian history. With ample irony and humour, Baumane explores the dynamics of familial and social expectations to create a very personal look at mental illness. With endless imagination, she creates daring stories depicting art, romance, nature, business and political upheaval – all in discovery of her own sanity. Employing a unique combination of papier-mâché stop-motion and classic hand drawn animation, Baumane creates a poignant, stunningly rendered narrative that brilliantly (and sometimes hilariously) combines her family’s history with the complex, dramatic history of Latvia.
