In Case of No Emergency: The Films of Ruben Ístlund
Richcraft Hall Theatre (formerly River Building), Carleton University, Saturday, March 21, 2015, 9:00 pm
Never has a film title been more apt, as Ruben Östlund’s latest, Force Majeure, garnered universal critical praise as it toured the festival circuit. At its core, the film deals with a “crisis of masculinity”. Tomas is on a ski-vacation in the French Alps with his family. When a controlled avalanche goes awry, Tomas, at the last second, grabs his phone and runs from his family. The remainder of the film is equivalent to watching the dust settle, as Tomas’s identity is thrown into contrast, clashing with the societal expectations of masculinity. So, too, must his family re-evaluate the roles they have given to one another. The avalanche analogies abound as Tomas and his family must confront this new emotional weight before it overtakes them. Featuring a score which practically vibrates with tension and cinematography that carefully lays bare the dawning gravity of Tomas’ actions, Östlund’s latest suggests that he, too, may be an unstoppable force.
