"pay-what-you-can" admission • doors open at 18:30

Club SAW, Thursday, April 30, 2015, 7:00 pm
Inaugurated in 1998, the seventeenth season of this ongoing visiting artist series presents artist-curated evenings of independent experimental film and video in the intimate atmosphere of Club SAW. Once again, the series features Canadian experimental cinema, with guest filmmakers presenting their work and engaging in extensive discussions with audience members for a "pay-what-you-can" admission.

The Canadian Film Institute, as part of its ongoing intimate and interactive guest artist series, is proud to present the works of filmmaker Shelley Niro, showcased as part of the Ontario Scene festival.

The films of Aboriginal artist Shelley Niro are as diverse as they are impressive. A member of the Six Nations Reserve, Turtle Clan, Bay of Quinte Mohawk, Niro is an internationally acclaimed multidisciplinary artist whose work challenges stereotypical images of Aboriginal identity and history, merging fiction, documentary, and experimentation into surprising and unforgettable storytelling. She has worked in a variety of media, including beadwork, painting, and photography.

"Her images suggest a transcendence of reality that allows a new, more dynamic understanding of reality rather than an escape from it." – Carol Kalafatic, Culture Critic

This screening, curated by Niro herself, will present a selection of her films from over two decades of film work. All films are in English, and some contain short segments in Aboriginal languages.

[NOTE: Unfortunately, Shelley Niro is unable to attend the Café Ex presentation, but sends her regrets.]
