12th Israeli Film Festival
Tuesday, 02 June 2015
Another Festival has arrived! We at the Canadian Film Institute, in collaboration with our friends at the Israeli Cultural Forum (Soloway Jewish Community Centre, Vered Israel Cultural and Educational Program, the Embassy of Israel in Canada, and the Canada-Israel Cultural Foundation) are pleased to announce the arrival of the 12th Israeli Film Festival. The four-film event kicks off this Thursday, June 4th at Carleton University's River Building Theatre and runs on select dates until June 14th.

As you may know, the 12th Israeli Film Festival is a popular celebration of Israeli cinema, and we couldn't be more pleased with this year's line-up of films.

The Festival opens with Dancing Arabs, a 2014 drama by acclaimed director Eran Riklis (Zaytoun, 2012; The Human Resources Manager, 2010; Lemon Tree, 2008; and The Syrian Bride, 2004). Following on June 7th is Apples From the Desert (2014), directed by Arik Lubetzky and Matt Harari. Above and Beyond (2015), a stirring documentary directed by Roberta Grossman (Blessed is the Match: The Life and Death of Hannah Senesh, 2008) premieres on June 11th. And finally, Nissim Dayan's The Dove Flyer (2014) closes the Festival on June 14th. Visit our official page for film synopses, trailers and more!

All screenings will be presented at Carleton University’s River Building Theatre (43 Campus Ave. at the corner of University Dr.) beginning at 7:00 p.m. Tickets are now available online and will also be sold at the door starting 30 minutes before scheduled show times. Tickets are $13 for general admission, or $9 for CFI Members, seniors, students, and members of the Soloway Jewish Community Centre. For complete Festival details, including ticket and venue information, click here.

We hope to see you at one or more — or all! — of this year's Israeli Film Festival screenings. We encourage you to share the event with your friends and family, and to stay connected with us by following our Facebook and Twitter pages.

Thank you!

It's Time for Shorts! (Short Films That Is...)
Wednesday, 27 May 2015
We're very excited to once again collaborate with the European Union Delegation to Canada, the European Union National Institutes for Culture (EUNIC), and the diplomatic missions of EU Member States in presenting the European Union Short Film Festival. This showcase of international short film talent runs May 28th-30th at Club SAW (67 Nicholas St.), and is offered completely free – though seating is limited.

The European Union Short Film Festival features an engaging series of 18 short films over three days in a variety of formats including drama, documentary, and animation. All presentations are Ottawa premieres and will be presented in their original language with English sub-titles.

The three-night event is free to attend, however seating is extremely limited. Please try to arrive at least 15 minutes early to guarantee a spot.

As a special bonus, each night of the Festival will begin at 6:30 p.m. with Tastes of Europe, a short reception-style gathering where a selection of traditional European food and refreshments will be available, courtesy of the diplomatic missions of EU Member States. Scheduled screenings will follow at 7:00pm.

We look forward to seeing you there!

Celebrating Portuguese Language Cinema in the Heart of the Nation's Capital
Wednesday, 20 May 2015
We at the Canadian Film Institute (CFI), in collaboration with the diplomatic Missions of the Portuguese Speaking Countries in Ottawa, and the Portuguese Program at the University of Ottawa, are proud to announce COR-AÇÃO: The 4th Portuguese Language Film Festival running May 21st to 23rd at the University of Ottawa's Alumni Auditorium, Jock Turcot University Centre.

Cor-Ação ("Colour-Action”) means "heart" in Portuguese and is a term that reflects both the passion and the personality of all the films shown at the Festival. All films are Ottawa premieres and are presented in Portuguese with English sub-titles.

This year's Festival line-up includes 4 feature-length presentations beginning with GONZAGA, a 2012 Brazilian drama directed by Breno Silveira, on May 21st. The film's plot is inspired by the biography of popular Brazilian singer Luiz Gonzaga and his son Gonzaguinha. Following that is the Angolan dramatic-comedy, O GRANDE KILAPY (The Great Kilapy) on May 22nd, and two films on the Festival's final day, May 23rd: Portugal's FLORBELA, a compelling biography of Portuguese poet Florbela Espanca directed by Vicente Alves do Ó, and A GUERRA DA BEATRIZ (Beatriz's War), directed by Bety Reis and Luigi Acquisto of East Timor. Beatriz's War is the first feature-length film ever produced by East Timor, so don't miss this landmark event!

All screenings will take place at the University of Ottawa's Alumni Auditorium located at 85 University Pvt. in the Jock Turcot University Centre. Tickets are available online via our website, and at the box office 30-minutes prior to each screening. General admission is $13 each, or $9 for CFI members, seniors and students. Screenings begin at 6:30 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. Be sure to visit the festival page for complete listings, trailers, and venue information.
