Dear CFI Supporters,

What an 80th year it’s been!

Since last August 27th when we celebrated eight decades of film programming and film education at a party at City Hall with 500 of you, we have had a remarkable year of international film festivals, artist talks, panel discussions and, yes, a party or two. We also had many renowned Canadian filmmakers and other film professionals from across Canada sending birthday greeting video messages to us to help celebrate our milestone year. (Check back often this summer as we release all the congratulatory videos!)

Over the course of the 80th season, we had a number of other special anniversaries: our 1st African Film Festival, celebrating the extraordinary and rarely seen cinemas of the continent of Africa; the 30th European Union Film Festival, featuring all 28 member states and well as several special guest filmmakers from the EU in Ottawa; the 20th Latin American Film Festival, featuring guest filmmakers and a special panel on human migration in the Americas. Our ongoing Canadian programming was strong, too, with the Café Ex Experimental Film and The Enlightened Screen series both attracting solid audiences and fascinating and stimulating guest artist talks. Along the way, we also presented festivals of films from Taiwan, Israel, Japan, the Baltic-Nordic nations, and DiverCine, a festival of films from various countries in La Francophonie. And, of course, the world of animation came again to Ottawa last September for our Ottawa International Animation Festival.

On a sad note, our 80th year also saw the loss of two great lovers of cinema and the CFI: our beloved board member Peter Fleming succumbed to cancer in June, as did long time CFI supporter and friend, Australian filmmaker Paul Cox. They are both gone too soon and they are greatly missed, but we will continue to do the work that they inspired – and continue to inspire – us to do.

And so, before we break for the summer to prepare our next season, we want to thank you for your amazing ongoing support of the CFI, and for following our programming to various venues in the city. Like you, we can’t wait until 2017 when we will be presenting all our films in the new state-of-the-art screening venue at the redeveloped and expanded Arts Court in the centre of one of the best cinema cities in the world.

Have a wonderful summer and we’ll see you in September at the 40th anniversary edition of our Ottawa International Animation Festival!

Vive le cinema!
